Forensic Molecular Genetics

Forensic Molecular Genetics Laboratory is the unit where molecular genetic analysis are carried out for biological samples such as cell, parafine embeded tissue, blood, urine, sperm, hair, bone, body hair, saliva and buccal swab etc. Services provided in this unit are obtained by competent, responsible scientists with continiuing professional development, who serve justice and public, via using modern science and technology, with internationally accepted, well-trusted methods and calibrated equipment. Globally accepted methods are used in our laboratory which has been accredited by TÜRKAK since 2012. For this purpose, quality awareness has been raised in our laboratory and a quality system fit for ISO 17025 has been brought to existence and standard requirements are continuously implemented.

Samples Admission Criteria

1. Formal Application

Formal applications, after approval from the Director of the Institute of Forensic Sciences, are transfered to Sample Registry Unit to be admitted to the laboratory.

  1. amgl2 Admissions made in person by the people whose arms are bound and sent via summon by the court and prosecution are accepted at the Sample Registry Unit of Forensic Sciences Laboratory in the Institute of Forensic Sciences. Seals and identification are checked by the person in charge accordingly to the summon sent by court.
  2. In other cases, samples are taken by facilities seen fit by prosecution or court and sent to us after properly sealed, along with a summon.

Report deadline: 15-20 work days.

2. Custom Application

All samples that belong to custom applications to the Forensic Molecular Genetics Laboratory are taken by our forensic nurse. Biological samples sent via cargo, courrier or postal services are not accepted.

a) Paternity admissions;

The analysis carried out is thoroughly individual and unalterable genetic profile. This profile is obtained by a fragment that is inherited, and does not carry a genuine gene.

  • Applicants show up in person and apply to the Sample Registration Unit via a petition (Applications are submitted via official identity certificate and a photo each).
  • Pre-DNA analysis, biological samples must be collected from both mother and father, as well as the child or children all together; if when mother or father is deceased, a death certificate must be presented.
  • At situations when mother or father is missing, custom applications are denied due to being unprovable.
  • Paternity (affiliation) studies require a written confirmation from mother or father; otherwise the analysis is cancelled (children under age need a joint approval from both parents). In these cases, a printed copy of the approval form is handed to related parties to be read and signed before biological sample is taken.
  • All controls by person in charge, must be done by checking official certificates containing a photo of mother, father and child.
  • Analysis are carried out via buccal saliva or blood samples.
  • Biological samples are taken by person in charge. (Custom applications require all parties movant to be present in the facility and witness all biological sampling done with each member)
  • This analysis can not be carried out via mother’s womb.
  • Biological samples taken in our facility, may be used for research and development purposes once proper approval forms are signed by relevant person.

NOTE: Hair, fingernail, stain and biological samples collected without parental consent are considered unethical, therefore are not accepted

b) Identification admissions;

  • People who apply to Assisted Reproductive Technology Applications and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centers that are in need of DNA analysis are accepted by doctor’s seal and signed referral.
  • Custom identification admissions (cell, paraphine embeded tissue, blood, urine, sperm, hair, bone, body hair, saliva and buccal swab etc.) of molecular genetic analysis of biological samples are accepted after approved by the Directory of the Institute of Forensic Sciences.
  • Applicants apply via petition by visiting the Institute of Forensic Sciences, Forensic Science Laboratory Sample Registration Unit in person (Application is done via official identity certificates and one photo for each applicant).
  • Consent of all related parties are taken (children of under age are required a joint consent of both parents).amgl3
